It is not so easy to define when fashion is “fair”. GRUENE WIESE refer to the core labor standards coined by human rights organizations and trade unions and other international labor standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO). These standards require, for example, a maximum working week of 48 hours, a maximum of 12 hours of overtime per week, at least 1 day off per week, no employment of minors and freedom to organize trade unions. At many of our manufacturers, these criteria are far exceeded. Whenever production does not take place in a country whose government can be trusted to enforce these standards, production is inspected by independent organizations such as FairTrade (FLO) or the Fair Wear Fondation (FWF).

In addition, each manufacturer must prove that it is making efforts to pay so-called living wages. Living wages are measured by the country-specific cost of living and are often significantly higher than state minimum wages. Since a manufacturer is usually only one of many clients of a factory, he alone can hardly ensure that the wages are actually living wages. However, they can do a lot to bring wages closer to this goal.

We also make sure that cotton farmers receive a fair price for their organic cotton. The organic cotton of almost all our brands is either GOTS or Fairtrade certified. Sometimes both.
